Ocean Empires
Ocean Empires takes the audience on a unique journey into the heart of a coral
reef to tell the story of how simple animals and plants have managed to build the
greatest of all biological constructions – the atolls.

Ocean Empires shows how these underwater mountains form great chains across
the Pacific Ocean. Filmed over 3 years, Ocean Empires contains the best images
ever recorded of mass spawning by fishes and corals, spectacular footage of
predation by a massive tiger shark and exquisite rare images of the deadly
conesnail murdering its sleeping victims.

Reef Formation

Reef formation

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 0m 55s - 4MB

The extensive network of stepping-stones formed by simple corals and algae have allowed countless species to explore the ocean.

Sand cays

Over time a great bulk of plant and animal skeletons accumulate until the reef reaches the surface and can grow no further.

Reef Relationships

Competition

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 15s - 6MB

Space is scarce on a coral reef and many species have evolved ingenious tactics to secure the top spot.

Symbiosis

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 0m 39s - 4MB

One of nature’s greatest evolutionary achievements is the fusion of animal with plant. Creatures, such as the upside-down jellyfish and giant clam, use it to their advantage.

Reef relationships

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 31s - 12MB

On a reef many creatures live together but the terms of the deal struck for shared lodging varies.

Reef Biodivesity

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 52s - 10MB

Why are there so many species on the reef? Over time, evolution has run wild!

Food Web

Wall of mouths

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 40s - 9MB

The reef presents a wall of mouths to the sea. The most densely conpacted array of interconnected life on the planet.

Plants

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 40s - 9MB

The roles of grazers, scavengers and predators all ultimately depend on the bottom rung of the ladder….the plants.

Plankton

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 36s - 12MB

In every drop of water, in every sea, is plankton. Fantastic shapes and forms living their lives unseen.

Fish biology

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 46s - 14MB

Tropical coral reefs contain more fish species than any other habitat. With such diversity, fish have become highly specialized in their diet and way of life.

Tiger sharks

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 23s - 12MB

Tiger sharks are the garbage collectors of the oceans. When you eat the dead there is no need to be in a hurry.

Reproduction

Fish eggs

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 33s - 9MB

Different types of fish have very different ways of dealing with their eggs; some guard them fiercely, while others leave them to fend for themselves.

Fish spawning

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 0s - 11MB

Ensuring there is another generation is a dangerous journey and finding a mate is the first step.

Coral spawning

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 3m 46s - 16MB

Corals simultaneously release eggs and sperm into the water column, where they meet, fertilize and settle, producing new individuals.

Sea cucumber spawning

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 07s - 5MB

All over the reef immobile creatures are stirring. They use the rhythm of the solar system as their time keeper.

Invertebrate mating

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 45s - 10MB

The instinct to mate affects all creatures. Flatworms and octopus let you in to secrets about mating in their worlds.

Turtles

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 5s - 10MB

The onset of summer in the tropics triggers turtles to come on to land to lay their eggs.

Corals

Corals

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 55s - 10MB

Corals are colonies of tiny jelly-fish like animals, called polyps. Some secrete limestone skeletons and are the primary building blocks of the reef.

Coral larva

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 24s - 8MB

Follow the journey of a newly formed coral larva through the ocean currents to its final resting place.

Coral growth

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 44s - 9MB

By cloning itself multiple times, a tiny coral polyp can transform itself into an enormous colony.

Coral biology

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video -. 2m 17s - 10MB

Learn how these tiny animals construct huge and spectacular coral reefs.

Shaped by the ocean

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 3m 23s - 17MB

On seaward slopes great ocean swells buffet the reef. Corals become compact and robust to resist the surge.

After dark

Night predators

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 2m 26s - 11MB

Some creatures have no need for light; they hunt by smell. Every species has its own witching hour.

Night on the reef

Adobe Flash Player

Download ipod video - 1m 20s - 7MB

The daytime creatures are seeking shelter for the day ahead at the same time as the night shift is making its way out on to the reef.
